Hangout Music Fest 2012 Recap

I just returned from three amazing days of sun, fun, and music on the white sandy beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama. The Hangout Music Festival took place there May 18-20 and it was my first time attending.  For a weekend the usually serene beaches were transformed into a huge party. I thought Bonnaroo was the best music festival, but Hangout Music Festival may be giving them a run for their money. Being on the beach truly adds something special to the festival and makes it unlike any other. It is true when they say location is key. Aside from the location Hangout is well organized from minor details to the large ones. Small time changes and added shows were sent out via Twitter and their mobile application. If you plan to attend an upcoming music festival like Bonnaroo, I encourage you to upload their mobile app. Having the festival’s mobile app ensures you have the must up to date information and most important the correct schedule. Unfortunately, Hangout made major schedule changes two days before so maps that were mailed out were incorrect and completely useless.

Now of course, the best part of the festival was the music. Hangout had a very eclectic lineup. I found a new band that I feel in love with Rebelution is a reggae band and the first show I saw. Their mellow, yet fun vibe set the mood for the entire weekend. Other great acts included Young the Giant, Cage the Elephant, Sound Tribe, Paper Diamond, Skrillex, Nashville’s own Cherub and Jack White. I missed alot of the shows, but fortunately many of the same acts will be playing at Roo and Lolla this year. What’s great about Hangout that makes it a rival for Bonnaroo is the beach after hours. We were able to walk behind our condo and find fire dancers and bands on the beach. Every night ended with fireworks on the beach which made it surreal. If you have never been to Hangout and like festivals, I encourage you to try it out next year, I promise you’ll be glad you did.

We will see if I think Hangout is still the best when I return to the farm for Bonnaroo next week. Summer music festival season is in full swing and I can’t wait for all the other fun and great music.
